What Makes a Dog a Psychiatric Service Dog?
Two things: a handler with a disability, and a dog individually trained to perform specific tasks that mitigate it. Comfort alone isn't a task — trained work is.
Common PSD Tasks
Interrupting panic attacks, deep-pressure therapy, grounding during flashbacks, medication reminders, guiding a handler out of overwhelming environments, and waking from night terrors.
ADA Protection
Trained service dogs — including PSDs — may accompany their handler in public places: stores, restaurants, hotels, and workplaces. No certification or registry is required under the ADA.
Air Travel (DOT)
Since 2021, airlines must accommodate trained service dogs, including PSDs, in the cabin free of charge. Airlines may require the DOT Service Animal Air Transportation Form before flying.
What a PSD Letter Does — and Doesn't — Do
The ADA does not require documentation for public access, and businesses may only ask two questions: whether the dog is required because of a disability, and what work it has been trained to perform. So why get a PSD letter?
- Housing: like an ESA letter, PSD documentation supports Fair Housing Act accommodation requests with landlords and HOAs.
- Air travel: the DOT form requires you to attest that you have a disability and your dog is task-trained; a clinical evaluation gives that attestation a genuine foundation.
- Peace of mind: schools, employers, and other institutions sometimes request supporting documentation for accommodation processes.
A letter does not replace training. Your dog must actually be task-trained and behave safely in public — and our clinicians will discuss training honestly during your evaluation, including resources if your dog isn't there yet.
How Our PSD Evaluation Works
- Book a telehealth visit — same-day slots are usually available.
- Complete a genuine evaluation with a Florida-licensed clinician covering your mental health, your disability-related needs, and your dog's trained tasks.
- Receive your signed PSD letter if you qualify — typically the same day — plus guidance for the DOT air-travel form. Our PSD letter is $149, or $189 combined with an ESA letter, and you're only charged after approval.
Psychiatric Service Dog Questions
What conditions can qualify for a PSD?
PTSD, panic disorder, severe anxiety, major depression, and other mental health disabilities can qualify when they substantially limit major life activities and a trained dog mitigates them. Qualification is always determined by the evaluating clinician.
Can I train my own psychiatric service dog?
Yes. The ADA allows owner-training — there is no required certification program. What matters is that the dog reliably performs disability-mitigating tasks and behaves safely in public.
What's the difference between a PSD and an ESA?
A PSD is task-trained and has public-access and air-travel rights under the ADA and DOT rules. An ESA provides therapeutic benefit through companionship and is protected in housing only. Read our Florida ESA laws guide for the housing side.
Do airlines accept your PSD documentation?
Airlines use the standardized DOT form, which the handler completes. Our evaluation and letter give you a genuine clinical basis for the attestations the form requires, and we provide guidance for completing it.
